oceanside international film festival

Celebrating 15 Years of Independent Film by the Sea

Every February, the Oceanside International Film Festival (OIFF) transforms this laid-back surf town into a cinematic hub where Hollywood creatives, indie filmmakers, and local dreamers come together to celebrate storytelling. We caught up with the festival team—Lou Niles (Executive Director), Sterling Anno (Co-Director of Programming), and Carly Starr Brullo Niles (Artistic Director & Co-Director of Programming)—to talk film, community, and what makes OIFF a true reflection of Oceanside’s creative soul.

Q: Tell us a bit about yourselves. How did each of you get involved with OIFF?

Lou: I’ve been Executive Director since 2018, curating the festival through my background in music, film, and surf culture. Outside OIFF, I co-host 91X Loudspeaker, a legendary local music show that’s been championing the San Diego scene for over 37 years.
Sterling: I’ve worked in the film festival world for 16 years, from San Diego Underground to Horrible Imaginings. I joined OIFF back in 2011 and have watched it evolve into something truly special for the community.
Carly: I’ve spent three decades in Hollywood as a producer, director, and writer. As OIFF’s Artistic Director and Executive Director of KOCT Television, I love bringing my industry connections and passion for storytelling home to Oceanside.

Q: How has the festival evolved over the years?

The festival began 15 years ago under the Oceanside Cultural Arts Foundation. Our team took the reins in 2017 and later formed a dedicated nonprofit to grow OIFF into an internationally recognized destination for filmmakers and film lovers. What started as a grassroots event has evolved into a world-class festival, attracting award-winning films, rising directors, and even Hollywood icons—many of whose works have gone on to earn critical and industry acclaim.

Q: The surf and skate block is a fan favorite. Any standout moments?

There have been so many! Our on-stage talk with surf filmmaker Taylor Steele was unforgettable, The Tony Alva Story celebrated a hometown legend, and Big Wave Guardians—written by Oceanside Surf Museum president Jim Kempton—was a true community favorite bringing together surfers and lifeguards. In a city built on surf culture, the surf film block always brings fun energy.

Q: You have deep roots in the music world. How does that show up in the festival?

Music and film are inseparable for us. We’ve hosted composer Jason Hill (Mindhunter) who gave us an inside look at his process for creating iconic film and TV scores, screened the Jason Mraz–produced The Opener, and featured documentaries like I Am Alright that explores mental wellbeing in the music businesses.

Q: How does OIFF reflect Oceanside’s unique arts culture?

Oceanside’s creativity runs deep—from the beaches to the backstreets. OIFF brings those voices together, blending global stories with homegrown talent. With local art installations, afterparties downtown, and surf culture front and center, the festival feels like an authentic extension of the city itself.

Q: Any partnerships that have been especially meaningful?

When Animal Kingdom was filming in Oceanside, Warner Bros. and TNT gave us exclusive access to debut the latest episodes at the festival. Over the years, the cast and crew became an annual highlight, sharing behind-the-scenes insights and participating in special panels for the show’s passionate fanbase.

Q: What sets OIFF apart from other regional film festivals?

We bring a touch of Hollywood sparkle to the coast! Our 20-year reunions for Blue Crush—with Kate Bosworth, Sanoe Lake, and a virtual cameo from Michelle Rodriguez—and Stephen King’s Thinner at the Star Theatre were unforgettable. We love creating those moments where fans can connect with film legends in a relaxed, beachside setting.

Q: What can audiences look forward to this year?

Four action-packed days of independent film from around the world, live Q&As, special opening and closing nights, an awards ceremony, and afterparties that extend the fun. It’s equal parts culture, creativity, and coastal cool.

Q: Why plan a visit around OIFF?

Because Oceanside’s creative energy is contagious. Beyond the festival, visitors can explore vibrant galleries, sip craft cocktails, dine farm-to-table, and stroll the beach at sunset—all within one of California’s 14 designated cultural districts. Once you experience OIFF, you’ll understand why so many people come for the films and stay for the vibe.

Art RX IN OCEANSIDE

WELLNESS THROUGH CREATIVITY

Oceanside is at the forefront of a growing wellness trend that harnesses the power of art to support mental health. Known as “social prescriptions,” these experiences—ranging from museum visits to art workshops—are designed to complement traditional mental health care.

Leading the charge is the Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA), which recently joined a nationwide network of cultural institutions partnering with Art Pharmacy to deliver Art Rx prescriptions to patients of San Ysidro Health. Through this innovative program, patients receive a “prescription” for a museum visit—complete with a guest pass—encouraging art engagement as part of a holistic approach to well-being.

“We’ve always known that art is transformative, and positively impacts both individuals and communities,” says OMA Executive Director Maria Mingalone. “It’s exciting to be part of this pilot program, especially since it aligns with our own art-for-wellness efforts — leaning into joy and community, finding moments of respite, and showcasing art that inspires awe.”

You don’t need a prescription to enjoy a wellness-focused experience at OMA. The museum’s new Art & Wellness Guide is available to all visitors, offering tips for mindful tours, meditation opportunities, and interactive exhibits—like huggable art! Each experience is designed to spark joy, reflection and connection. With this innovative approach, Oceanside shows that art isn’t just to be admired—it can truly be healing.

5 of Oceanside’s Hidden Haunts

While many are drawn to Oceanside for its vibrant community and cultural attractions, the city holds mysteries that are waiting to be unraveled. Tucked away amidst its historic landmarks are tales that have lingered for generations. Join us on a journey into the heart of Oceanside’s most haunted locations, where history and the paranormal intertwine.

THE STAR THEATRE

Opened in the 1950s, The Star Theatre is a gorgeous, vintage cinema space. But besides its ornate interiors and grandeur, the theater has long been rumored to be haunted. Patrons and staff alike have reported ghostly figures roaming the projection room, cold drafts in inexplicable places, and draining of electrical/camera equipment. Some attribute the hauntings to performers from days gone by, whose love for the stage keeps them returning, even in the afterlife. There’s even rumored to be a special seat in the house where the apparition of a man is continuously seen, watching on as performers grace the stage.

WATCH as The Osider Magazine does an EVP session inside the theatre during their Haunted Oceanside feature.

HUNTER STEAKHOUSE

A popular steakhouse by day, and a hotspot for paranormal activity by night. Hunter Steakhouse is believed to be the most haunted building in Oceanside as it sits on the former Buena Vista Cemetery.  Both staff and customers have reported sightings of ghostly figures, objects moving on their own, power surges, workers hearing their names being called and mysterious cold spots. The spirit of a woman seems to enjoy spending time in the stairwell to the bar area. A floating apparition was seen on the second floor and the list goes on. The history behind this is linked to the cemetery on this site between 1888 and 1916, which had an estimated 50 bodies buried there.

A small reminder of the Buena Vista Cemetery remains in the form of a plaque near the entrance of the restaurant, donated by the Oceanside Historical Society. Part of it reads, “Dedicated to the memories of those who were buried at Buena Vista Cemetery. While some bodies were moved before and during construction on this site many remain here or nearby.”  The names of the people found on gravestones are listed on the plaque.

Fire Station No. 1

Built in 1929 and designed by famed architect Irving Gill, Oceanside’s Fire Station No. 1 is not the typical place you’d expect to find ghost stories. But those who’ve worked long nights there have a different tale to tell. Reports have surfaced of phantom footsteps, doors mysteriously slamming shut, and the eerie feeling of being watched. The origin of these hauntings seemingly ties back to its inception as a dual-purpose fire station and police station. The firemen identify three locations as having the most paranormal activity—jail cell #1, the “drunk tank,” and the women’s holding cell. All three have been converted into bunks where the guys refuse to sleep. “The guys get messed with all the time and a lot of the guys won’t even sleep (in the bunks). That’s where the jail cells used to be. They’ll usually stay in the front room. Whatever is here holds you down, you can’t move, and you can’t speak. In the beginning it’s unnerving, but after awhile you get used to it.” – Former Captain Tim Scott

hill street house

The two-story Victorian-style home on the 101 has been a staple of Oceanside for 135 years, but before it was the home to various restaurants, it was home to a woman who still resides there in spirit. According to news reports, workers on the property reported seeing the ghost of the home’s original owner, Sarah Weitzel, cruising the hallways and sitting on the patio in a Victorian-era blue dress. The Lady in Blue was said to regularly rattle the walls, push open doors and turn off the lights whenever she was upset that the historic 1888 home was not being well cared for in her absence.

READ MORE about Sarah’s story and an investigation conducted at the home.

SAN LUIS REY PIONEER CEMETERY

One of the city’s oldest landmarks, the San Luis Rey Pioneer Cemetery dates back to the 1800s and serves as the final resting place for many of the San Luis Rey Valley and Oceanside’s earliest inhabitants including Andrew Jackson Meyers, the founder of Oceanside. From spectral apparitions to unexplained photographic anomalies, many believe the spirits of those interred here remain, deeply attached to the land they once called home. Some claim that these lingering souls are Oceanside pioneers, still keeping watch over their beloved city.

Local Historian, Kristi Hawthorne, has taken a deeper dive into the story behind the San Luis Rey Pioneer Cemetery. “Ownership” has recently transitioned to the Oceanside Historical Society as official trustees of the cemetery in order to maintain this precious historical cemetery and preserve the history of the people buried there.

SEWING ROOTS IN O'SIDE

5 Clothing Brands that Call Oceanside Home

From surf to street to a little bit of Western chic…Oceanside’s style scene is stitched with personality, purpose, and serious creativity. Whether you’re looking for a new favorite hat, graphic tee, golf polo, or crewneck, these five fashion-forward brands chose Oceanside; and they’re making waves far beyond city limits.

BRIXTON

Born in a garage right here in Oceanside, Brixton began with a single hat—The Hooligan—and a whole lot of creative energy. What started as a passion project quickly evolved into a global lifestyle brand known for its clean, timeless style rooted in surf, music, and culture.

Today, you can find Brixton at Tremont Collective, a creative community hub in Oceanside that brings together local businesses, brands, and monthly events. It’s the perfect home for a brand that’s all about connection, creativity, and carving your own path.

From iconic headwear to effortlessly cool apparel, Brixton continues to carry its Oceanside spirit wherever it goes.

madstrange

Bold. Original. 100% Oceanside. MadStrange isn’t just a clothing brand – it’s a full-on creative force. What began as an art-driven fashion concept has grown into a hybrid retail shop, design studio, and independent music label, all based in the heart of O’side.

Each piece from their signature tees to the Oceanside Crewnecks – is stitched right at their local shop, blending premium comfort with street-smart edge. Every thread is rooted in quality, craftsmanship, and a whole lot of local pride.

More than just style, MadStrange is a platform for creative expression. Whether you’re lounging by the coast or repping O’side wherever life takes you, this brand’s got your back.

More philosophy than fashion, more lifestyle than label – Linksoul is a vibe, and it’s pure Oceanside.

Founded by John Ashworth and his nephew Geoff Cunningham, Linksoul was born from a deep love of golf – but it’s grown into something much bigger. The name comes from “links soul,” a nod to the soulful connection found on the golf course, and now extends to art, surf, hiking, yoga, and just enjoying life to the fullest.

Their Linksoul Lab on Pacific Coast Highway isn’t just a shop – it’s a community hub and creative space. Inside, you’ll find a design center, an art gallery, and a rotating calendar of events like workshops, concerts, benefit nights, and local film screenings. It’s also home base for their efforts to revitalize Goat Hill Park, Oceanside’s beloved municipal golf course that Linksoul helped save, restore, and reimagine as a model for public golf nationwide.

Their clothing reflects this ethos- versatile, comfortable pieces that transition effortlessly from the green to the beach to backyard hangs.

SHEISGRACIELOU - THE COWBOY PILLOWS CO.

Whimsical, Western, and wildly original – sheisgracielou is the wearable expression of Oceanside-based artist and designer Grace Vonstrahl. What started as a creative outlet has grown into a boutique brand that blends fashion, art, and personality in the most unexpected ways.

Her designs are rooted in her Western aesthetic and signature artwork, showing up on everything from handcrafted clothing to her standout Cowboy Pillows – yes, you read that right. Each piece is a love letter to self-expression, nostalgia, and playful coastal cowgirl energy.

Grace doesn’t follow trends – she creates them. Whether it’s a fringed jacket or a pillow that could headline a honky-tonk, everything she makes is meant to turn heads and spark joy.

MUNICIPAL

Fueling hustle, style, and serious self-belief, Municipal planted its flagship roots right here in Oceanside – and brought a whole vibe with it. Co-founded by Mark Wahlberg, the brand was born from a simple (and bold) mission: to create gear that empowers people to chase big dreams and crush their goals, every single day.

Inside the Oceanside flagship, you’ll find more than just premium apparel and footwear. It’s a full-on community hub – complete with a custom gear zone, barber shop, Municipal Coffee by Urth Caffé, lounge area with WiFi, and a soon-to-launch calendar of live events and local happenings. It’s the kind of space where creatives, athletes, entrepreneurs, and locals collide, caffeinate, and collaborate.

The brand’s signature “Sport Utility Performance” line blends technical performance with sharp, everyday style – perfect for running a meeting, running a mile, or running the town.

Whether you’re looking to gear up or just hang out, Municipal’s Oceanside home base is where ambition meets community – no excuses, just action.

There’s no shortage of things to do in Oceanside, but the fun doesn’t stop on land. Discover even more entertainment waiting just off the city’s pristine shores.

Your adventure will start in the Oceanside Harbor on the city’s north end, where a flurry of tour boats and charters depart daily. There you’ll find Oceanside Adventures, the premier whale watching and dolphin cruise company, and their two luxury vessels.

  • Nala – A brand new 63 foot, state-of-the-art catamaran with one-of-a-kind custom wrap designed by internationally renowned marine life artist & champion of the environment Wyland. His larger than life graphic masterpiece features visuals of a blue whale mom and baby. Nala is complete with a bar for refreshments and a raised platform for optimal 360 degree viewing.
  • Oceanside Adventures – Their signature 45-passenger catamaran, also boasting a Wyland masterpiece featuring depictions of local wildlife, has both covered and uncovered seating and is wheelchair accessible.

Their most popular tour lasts two hours and shuttles everyone from individuals, to families, to private parties straight to the vibrant ecosystem just a few miles off the coast. Once you’re underway, you’ll hear from an expert captain and naturalist, who will narrate your experience and tell you about the wildlife around you. You may relax inside the covered portion of the boat or stand at the bow or the sides as you make your way off the coast.

Oceanside is situated along the migration routes of several majestic species, so you will have the chance to spot pods of dolphins, diving whale tales, blowhole spouts, and even—if you’re lucky—breaching whales. You’ll have the opportunity to see minke whales, fin whales, and humpbacks year round. Grey whale season runs between November and April, and between May and October, you may catch a glimpse of the blue whale, which is the largest whale species on earth. Orcas and sharks may also be spotted on occasion, and you’re sure to see dolphins gliding through the blue waters as they do at all times of the year here since they don’t migrate.

What can you see?

November to April

May to October

Other Potential Sightings

Luckily, whales and dolphins are active at all times per day, making this a very schedule-friendly activity. Be sure to book your visit in advance as tours can book up quickly for this magical, up-close experience of our amazing marine ecosystem.

Contributing Writer & Photographer: Jefferson Graham, @PhotowalksTV

We tapped iPhone expert, Jefferson Graham for tips on snapping O’side like a pro. Jeff is a former USA TODAY tech columnist, host and podcaster, where he fronted the “Talking Tech” series over 2,000 episodes until 2021. He now hosts “PhotowalksTV” travel photography series on YouTube, Amazon Prime, Roku and Tubi & “iPhone Photo Show” podcast. Watch his photography tour here or read on for an insider guide that will ensure you leave Oceanside with stunning photos that will impress your friends!

Did you know that O’side is one of the most photogenic of the North San Diego beach cities? It’s got the historic downtown, which dates back to 1888, along with surf and beach culture, fabulous murals seemingly everywhere you look, a historic former movie palace, a fun harborfront with sea lions and pelicans who are happy to pose for photos and California’s largest Mission.

How’s that for beefing up your Instagram? Here are 7 of the best places for photos on your phone.

Artist alley

hr-wave

(212 Artist Alley Lane) is a great place to start to pose by dozens of murals. Remember to use Portrait Mode on your phone to blur the background–otherwise, people will just blend into the mural. For the classic “Greetings from Oceanside” mural that looks like a 1950s postcard, the place for that is the Seahive antique mall parking lot, 1555 Coast Highway.

The Star Theatre

hr-wave

The beautiful Star Theatre is across the street from Artist Alley on 402 Coast Highway. The theatre, now a home for theatrical productions, has a massive marquee that can be blocked by a street light. Tip: put your phone on .5 for ultra-wide and stand right underneath to fit it in, without the distractions.

Historic Sites

hr-wave

Local color: Downtown O’side is awash in the historic (the lovingly restored Brick Hotel, circa 1880s) and Top Gun House (as seen in the original movie) dozens of retro barber shops and many new, upscale bakeries, breweries and the like. Have fun juxtaposing the two different eras together downtown.

Oceanside Pier

hr-wave

The Pier is the centerpiece of downtown and stepping out along it is a great place to look down and get shots of the crashing waves and surfers riding them. For a great shot of the pier itself, try standing to the left of it, at sunset and get it just after the sun shine through it.

Roberts Cottages

hr-wave

Down off the Strand are the Roberts Cottages, a row of tiny little bungalows built in 1928 and still standing (and available for weekly rentals) today. They make a great shot, especially if you climb the stairs nearby and look down.

Oceanside Harbor

hr-wave

You can walk to this next spot from the pier, about two miles away, or take a short drive to the Harbor. This is the home of boating activities and getting your best shots of marine life, who tend to come out early in the morning. Remember not to approach the Sea Lions, as they are faster than they look!

Mission san luis rey

hr-wave

Mission San Luis Rey, set four miles from town, is worth the drive to see the expanse of the building set against the impressive lawn.
