CAFE, ARTISANAL SHOP, EVENT SPACE

Contributing Writer & Photographer: Jordan Younis

There’s no shortage of delicious coffee and curated spaces to drink it in Oceanside. With vibey java shops scattered all over town, it’s hard to keep them all straight, but Communal Coffee has taken root as an iconic favorite, not only in Oceanside but in San Diego.

Founded in 2016, Jen Byard opened Communal’s flagship location in North Park, followed by the quaint, outdoor shop in South Park. In 2021, Oceanside’s trendy Tremont Collective offered the perfect home for Communal’s expansion to the northern edge of the county.

Each location is unique to its neighborhood setting but echoes a consistent signature concept: bright, airy aesthetics, a focus on fostering connection and community, delicious coffee drinks, seasonal food items, curated local goods, and, of course, fresh flowers.

O’side’s Communal shop is situated in the collective’s corner spot, welcoming visitors with a sweeping open cafe space and sunlight that pours in through large windows lining the shop’s walls. The interior is complete with tables, couches and chairs, a large co-working table and a small bar lined with wine glasses at the ready. Sidewalk seating as well as a large private patio are also part of the shop’s outdoor area.

On any day of the week, morning through evening, you’ll find a full house of remote workers, creatives, vacationers and locals lingering and enjoying the space. With a robust menu, Communal offers inventive and seasonal coffee drinks along with “not coffee” selections, like sparkling limeades, matcha lattes, local kombucha and seasonal cocktails. Food is available all day, from a variety of toasts like avocado and peach-ricotta, to bagel sandwiches with a breakfast flare. In the afternoon and evening, opt for building your own pizza, or snack on charcuterie along with a glass of natural wine or a refreshing spritz.

In addition to the cafe experience, Communal doubles as a treasure trove for any shopper. Visitors can peruse meticulously curated shelves of locally sourced goods like candles, jewelry, children’s clothing, plants, wine, and bouquets. The cafe is flanked by a designated flower shop in a room beyond the ordering counter, and a separate shop known as the Annex sits next door. An extension of Communal’s retail section, the Annex greets visitors with a calming, earthy aesthetic, and even houses a private event space behind the shop, which straddles the interior space and a charming outdoor patio area. The event space often hosts workshops and is available for rent as a picturesque setting for work outings, birthday parties, bridal and baby showers, and more. This area sprawls out to their large Tremont Collective patio space that offers dance fitness and pilates classes.

True to its name, Communal is a must-visit for anyone seeking a great latte, a curated seasonal menu, hands-on experiences, unique gifts, and a thoughtfully designed space to unwind and enjoy an idyllic O’side day. Discover more about this unique spot HERE.

Beach House Winery

Contributing Writer & Photographer: Jordan Younis

California is home to the most venerable vineyards and winemakers in the nation. Bucket-list destinations like Napa and Sonoma draw millions of visitors to the Golden State each year, and with its wholesome, stay-a-while towns, stunning scenery, and premium vintners, the Central Coast is a favorite region for vacationers and locals alike.

San Diego, however, hasn’t been known for its wines. Tasting tours typically take place south of the border in Mexico’s Valle de Guadalupe, or in inland Temecula. But one small winery in Oceanside’s South Morro Hills is changing that.

Perched atop the ridgeline of the Sleeping Indian ridgeline, Beach House Winery was born out of George and Kim Murray’s passion project. The couple started experimenting with winemaking at their beachside home in the 90s – a hobby that evolved into a two-acre vineyard that now hosts the first winery in Oceanside’s agricultural community.

When arriving at the “Vigna al Mare” (Vineyard at the Sea), visitors will follow a long driveway past rows of growing grapes before reaching the main house, where Kim and George will be pouring a variety of reds and whites – each bottle adorned with a simply sketched label drawn by George himself. The family and community feel is palpable in the atmosphere – woven into the winery’s DNA.

“We want it to feel relaxed and intimate, like you’re visiting old friends at home,” George shared.

At the bar, visitors can select one of many varietals created from the Beach House’s own grapes, as well as grapes sourced from other California growers. With a glass in hand, the trip up the old-world spiral staircase promises breathtaking views from the upper deck. With 360-degree views of North County and the ocean, the picturesque patio is a place to let hours pass, and to take in the rich beauty of the agricultural South Morro Hills community.

When most people think of Oceanside, they think of a surfer’s paradise sprinkled with taco shops and local craft coffee, but the city’s agritourism initiative is expanding its reputation, and O’side Sips businesses like Beach House Winery are spearheading that transformation. This blend of agriculture and tourism is one of the fastest-growing niches of the travel industry. Now, visitors to the area can partake in more than just shopping and standard dining experiences – they can enjoy the city’s farms and wineries, and enjoy a mix of education, recreation and relaxation, all while boosting the local economy. And who doesn’t want to boost the local economy… with a glass of wine in hand.

Oceanside Proposals

10 ways to ‘Say YES’ in Oceanside

Love is in the air! Valentine’s Day is one of the most popular times to propose and if you’re thinking of proposing in Oceanside, we have just the inspiration you need. Here are some ideas to get you started. If you already got engaged in Oceanside, we’d love to hear about the big romantic moment. Please share your stories with us by tagging @visitoceanside on social media or by emailing us your stories and proposal photos at groups@visitoceanside.org. Let us include your story in an upcoming blog!

1. Oceanside Pier

Okay, so maybe the Oceanside Pier tops all of our lists in Oceanside, but when a pier is this majestic and beautiful, how can it not? There is no better place to catch a sunset and then drop to one knee and ask for your beloved’s hand in marriage. Just please hold tight to that ring if you’re proposing on the actual pier.

Proposal: The Oceanside Pier is popular for fishing. If you do not have your own supplies, check in with the Oceanside Pier Bait Shop, located halfway down the pier, to rent your fishing poles, get bait, and your license. When your significant other isn’t looking, tie a fake ring onto the fishing hook and gently cast into the water (no overhead casting at the pier). Hand the pole to your partner. After a few minutes, “notice” that the bait came off, and then have them reel it in. At the confused moment, when they’re looking at the fake ring at the end of the hook, you produce the real one.

Tip: When there is a negative low tide, the glassy sand under the pier makes for stunning photos.

2. Oceanside Harbor

Oceanside Harbor has several options for your ocean proposal. You can rent and pilot your own vessel through Oceanside Boat Rentals. They have kayaks, sailboats, pedal boats, power boats, electric boats, and more. If you prefer to sit back and have all of the arrangements made for you, several boat charters out of Oceanside Harbor offer these services and overnight excursions.

Proposal: (KISS) Keep IShort & Sweet with a bottle of champagne, a ring, and a question.

Tip: Book your dinner reservation at the Oceanside Broiler. Its waterfront location makes a romantic spot to celebrate a “yes”.

3. Harbor Beach Jetty

Say you’ll follow your love to the ends of the Earth. This is not the end of the road, but the beginning to a new horizon. This Jetty is located at the north end of Harbor Beach bordering Oceanside Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. Weather and time of year are very important as it can be very windy with rough seas. Stay off the jetty in high surf conditions. Video: Sweet proposal by Joel to Alanna in the rain at the Oceanside Harbor.

Proposal: Imagine the two of you are walking along the jetty when all of a sudden you spot a bottle nestled in the rocks with a message inside. Astonished, you urge your fiancé to open the bottle and retrieve the note; a romantic marriage proposal from you.

Tip: Procure a friend to hide the bottle in a mutually selected area. Have them hide it just before you’re supposed to arrive. Be very careful for the bottle not to be washed away, polluting our waters.

4. Enchanting and Historic

For the spiritual couple, there is a certain reverence as you walk the hallowed grounds of Mission San Luis Rey.  Start your lifetime together with the blessings of the spirits of the padres of the past.

Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, the “King of the Missions,” is the 18th and largest in a chain of 21 California Missions established by the Spanish Franciscans in 1798. Areas of Mission San Luis Rey are off-limits to the public so check ahead before solidifying your plans.

Proposal: After your tour of the Mission, head over to Heritage Park where you’ve arranged a dinner for two. Hire a caterer to set the scene with a fully decorated table, candles and a floral centerpiece under the park’s gazebo. Hire a musician to softly play in the background. For the last course, have the server present the ring on a covered tray. Note: This will take considerable coordination between you, City of Oceanside’s Park and Recreation, and your caterer, so plan accordingly, but this epic proposal is one for the history books.

5. GoJUMP Coastal Skydiving

The couple that jumps together, stays together. The GoJump Oceanside team will be in the know from check in to landing and quietly help support all the logistics. The inside photo and videos are professionally edited photos and videos of your experience with footage taken from a camera mounted on the hand of your tandem master.

Proposal: GoJump Oceanside has a engagement package and will take care of all of the details for you! Have your friends and family hidden away and then after take-off, have them directed out to the drop zone (DZ if you want to sound cool) to cheer as you descend!! Make sure that you’re out of the plane first, so you’re on the ground in time to grab the ring from a trusted friend and “drop” to one knee.

6. Junior Seau Oceanside Pier Amphitheater

The Junior Seau Pier Amphitheater became a part of pop-culture history when it was featured at the end of the movie Bring It On (2000). The Oceanside Bandshell (its original name) was constructed in 1937 as a project of the federal Works Progress Administration and significantly altered in 1950 with its current art deco design. Today, the amphitheater hosts events, concerts, activities, festivals, and competitions throughout the year.

Proposal: During the summer, the City of Oceanside hosts Movie Night at the Pier. Check with the organizers to see if you can insert your own personal trailer like the guy above (grab a tissue): All together now…Awwwwwwwe. You can also look into renting the our own historic Star Theatre or Brooke’s Theatre.

7. Rent a Vacation Rental

Oceanside is home to several beach front vacation rentals that are large enough to hold multiple families all together. Beachfront Only vacation rentals are all directly on the ocean. Whether you are looking for a charming one bedroom beach bungalow on the sand for a romantic getaway, or a ten bedroom oceanfront luxurious mansion for your entire family, they are sure to have the place for you! Please check with your accommodations before planning any group gathering as many of them have restrictions as to what is permitted.

Proposal: Here is something different. This bride and groom had already been secretly engaged while stealthily planning a small intimate wedding. The groom gathered all of their friends and family at a beach front vacation rental on the premise that he was going to propose. After she accepted, they announced to their guests that they have actually been gathered to witness their wedding. (Tears ensue)

Tip: Make sure your significant other is in on the surprise.  Not everyone will appreciate having a wedding sprung on them without warning.

8. Downtown Scavenger Hunt

When it comes to walking throughout Downtown Oceanside, there are so many places to explore, murals to see, sculptures, architecture, historical buildings, amazing restaurants, and let’s not forget the breweries and wine tasting rooms.

Proposal: Use the video above to be inspired to create a scavenger hunt throughout town that either ends on the pier or on the beach. Have your group of family and friends waiting at the end to help with the surprise. If the thought of putting together a scavenger hunt is daunting, we are frequent hosts to teambuilding companies that have already created fun itineraries for Downtown Oceanside. Reach out to us and let us give you a hand.

9. Oceanside Museum of Art

Oceanside Museum of Art is a premier regional art museum and a leader of arts and culture in San Diego. In addition to several highly praised contemporary art exhibitions per year, museum programming includes classes, lectures, docent tours, parties, concerts, films, culinary events, and chartered travel to other cultural art venues and destinations.

Proposal: In the classic 80’s movie, Some Kind of Wonderful, Kevin takes his date Amanda to the museum after hours where he surprises her with a portrait of her hanging in the gallery that he painted. It’s OK, if you’re not a talented painter.  Simply watch the video above and create your own photo gallery of your lives together up to that point. Contact the Oceanside Museum of Art for availability of your exhibit.

10. Love Locks

The Love the O interactive sculpture proposal, created by Randall Art Ranch has been a feature at the Oceanside Harbor since late 2022. The metal sculpture is installed between the Oceanside Harbor and Harbor Beach (Lot 11) for the community to create a lasting connection and celebrate a commitment by placing a personal lock on the sculpture. Engraved locks, or ones simply marked for sentimental meaning to celebrate a birth, a marriage, a loved one, or a special occasion can be hung and revisited.

The 10’ x 10’ sculpture is fabricated with Corten steel. Sometimes called weathering steel, the metal is designed to develop a protective weathered surface which ages to a rusty, earthy look without losing its durability due to the salty sea air.

Dining at flying pig pub & kitchen

Contributing Writer & Photographer: Jordan Younis

Oceanside is the coastal California cradle of “flip flop” fine dining, and Flying Pig Pub & Kitchen may well be the embodiment of it. Just blocks from the beach in the lively downtown, this 2023 San Diego Magazine-rated Best Southern Restaurant is one of O’side’s original staples and a cornerstone of the city’s community of chefs.

Diners have the option of enjoying the idyllic San Diego weather on Flying Pig’s street patio, inside to the main dining area or the newest addition, East Wing Lounge & Bottle Shop. Warm and eclectic, the restaurant’s frame is a mix of wood, metal and brick adorned with funky flair. Antique chandeliers and lanterns hang from an exposed wood beam ceiling, vintage mismatched mirrors, photos and art pieces line the walls, and a few taxidermy animals sit perched high above, all lending themselves to Flying Pig’s distinctive “industrial country” vibe.

The menu is just as eclectic as the decor. With an emphasis on using local farms, and sustainable ingredients, owners Roddy and Aaron Browning created a wide sampling of elevated Southern American comfort food. Classics like fried chicken, mashed potatoes and bacon-collard greens mingle with shareable dishes ranging from charcuterie, to deviled eggs, to Flying Pig’s iconic (and Instagrammable) cast iron mac and cheese. Tender port-braised short ribs set on a mountain of truffle risotto and black-eyed peas and the menu’s single housemade pasta dish are stars of the entree selection that are not to be missed.

At the bar, a collection of housemade cocktails – or Pigtails – feature classics with a Flying Pig twist. The bourbon-based “Fashionably Late” and “Gold Rush” are the perfect compliment to the southern cuisine, but a simple margarita and mule and a list of California beers are also available.

Aside from wholesome comfort food, visitors to Flying Pig will discover an element of human comfort nestled into the restaurant’s southern hospitality. And this, perhaps, is what sets Oceanside and its core culinary players like Flying Pig apart: a palpable camaraderie that connects the food community.

With tears in her eyes, Owner Aaron Browning shared a story of when their original Oceanside location was closing before moving to its current Mission Avenue home. In the last two days of being open, their cook left, leaving them under-manned in one of their busiest times. In immediate need of help, she phoned fellow Oceanside chef and friend, William Eick of Matsu, Flying Pig’s former home. Despite the menu being a complete departure from Chef Willie’s modern Japanese wheelhouse, he turned up thirty minutes later to help whip up Pig’s menu items on the fly to keep the operation afloat through the transition.

“Oceanside is its own entity when it comes to the restaurant scene – it is not like any other city. We’re all here to do the same thing, but we don’t compete. We’re a huge family,” she says.

And that familial feel echoed through the Oceanside community is what you’ll find in full-force at Flying Pig and East Wing lounge. From southern hospitality to southern comfort food with a California edge, this neighborhood institution will undoubtedly find its way to the top of your O’side dining bucket list.

Want to experience more of the stories behind Oceanside’s top restaurant first hand? Book a spot on one of Carla and Linda’s Food Tours for a culinary adventure featuring chef-curated selections from Oceanside’s finest.

Beach Wedding 101 https://visitoceanside.org/blog/beach-wedding-101/ Sun, 26 Feb 2023 00:00:00 +0000 https://osiddevelopment.flywheelstaging.com/beach-wedding-101/ When you’re wedding planning in Southern California at some point you may have considered having your wedding at the beach. You’ve dreamed of the sun setting in the background, cool breezes in your hair, the smell of the salted sea, and your toes in the sand. Your dream can quickly turn into a nightmare if you’re not prepared. Here is a list of potential issues that you may run into and how to plan accordingly.

Beach Wedding 101

Welcome to O’side, where wedding dreams dance with the rhythm of the warm sun, caressed by the gentle touch of cool coastal breezes. Here, beneath the endless blue skies, you’ll find a place where sandy toes and salty kisses intertwine, creating memories that will forever linger in your heart. We have crafted this blog to guide you in assembling the most charming beach wedding experience. We understand that the beach holds a unique allure, and we want to ensure that your celebration remains flawless, without any unexpected surprises.

Oceanside Beach Weddings

Looking to tie the knot on the sun-kissed shores of Oceanside? We’ve got you covered with the ultimate beach wedding destinations! The number one spot on our list is the breathtaking Oceanside Harbor Beach, where ample stretches of sand await you. Plus, parking is a breeze with plenty of options, including free parking just a short stroll away. It’s the perfect choice for vendors to set up and create your dream ceremony.

For a more secluded vibe, our second recommendation is North of the Pier, off Breakwater Way. Guests will find easy access from the parking lot conveniently located at the corner of Breakwater and Pacific. And while Buccaneer Beach may be a hidden gem, it’s worth noting that weddings aren’t permitted there due to its size.

Now, let’s talk permits. Most likely, you’ll need one for your beachfront celebration. Please keep in mind that permits are not issued by the City of Oceanside between May 15 and September 15, as our beaches are buzzing with activity during that peak season. To secure your permit, you can apply up to a year in advance but make sure to do so at least 60 days prior to your chosen date. Keep in mind that certain dates might already be taken due to other permitted events, so a little flexibility is key.

If your guest list is under 25 and you’re envisioning a simple, walk-up ceremony lasting no more than 30 minutes, you’re in luck! You can choose any spot on the beach, at any time, without the need for set-up. That means no chairs, arches, equipment, decorations, tenting, or amplified music. However, please note that all reception activities will always require a permit.

So, get ready to embark on a beachy adventure as you exchange vows with the sand beneath your toes and the ocean breeze caressing your love-filled hearts. Oceanside welcomes you to create lifelong memories in the most laid-back and inviting coastal atmosphere.

To start the application process, complete the Beach Application form on the City of Oceanside website to book your beach wedding in Oceanside.

Over several decades many residents and visitors alike have often wondered who lived beyond the gate at the end of Oceanside’s South Pacific Street. An impressive entrance allowed but a sneak peek into beautiful homes with unique architectural features.

Kenyon A. Keith, a wealthy resident of Pasadena, purchased 28 acres of oceanfront property in 1928. The following year he began developing a colony with custom built homes that were designed to resemble a French fishing village, St. Malo. Residency was by invitation only and limited to family and hand-selected friends.

The St. Malo Subdivision begins at Eaton and South Pacific Streets. However, the St. Malo community, also extends on either side of the 2000 block of South Pacific Street. As homes were constructed, and continue to be built, they are kept to a strict standard of architectural style and materials, built and weathered to appear as if they have been there for decades.

The entryway or St. Malo Gate was designed by architect William McCay. Keith wanted an imposing entrance to the St. Malo Beach community and built it to represent “a sense of place.”

Oceanside’s Secret Hideaway of the Rich and Famous

St. Malo homes weren’t just weekend hideaways for the wealthy, wanting to escape from the city, they often “summered” there. Owners brought a full staff, with maids and cooks as most homes were built with “servants’ quarters.”

Homes were fondly described by owners as “storybook cottages” or “chalets.” Nicknamed “Pasadena on the Rocks”, St. Malo offered a private beach, playground, 3 tennis courts, a volleyball court and a clubhouse cabana. Activities included exclusive cocktail parties, barbeques and trips to the Del Mar Races. Close friends of the owners were allowed to rent or even borrow houses for social gatherings and vacations.

Although Oceanside residents were not likely privy to the comings and goings of colonists, their activities were posted in the society pages of the Los Angeles Times that featured headlines such as: “St. Malo is Favorite for Pasadena Folk”; “St. Malo Beckons Social Set”; “St. Malo Beach Hums with Activity.” The social columnists promoted the exclusivity of St. Malo, but provided the names of the socialites and families that were staying there, along with their activities and other gossip. They boasted that St. Malo parties were better than any in Hollywood.

While newspaper articles attributed the location of St. Malo as in or near Oceanside, some attempted to place the community nearer tonier locales such La Jolla or Del Mar. However, in 1950 the City of Oceanside annexed the St. Malo subdivision, at the owners’ request, which at the time had grown to 24 homes.

The heyday of St. Malo was from the 1930s and 1960s. Owners included Desaix Myers, a mining engineer; Dr. John Dunlop, pioneer orthopedic surgeon; Karl G. Von Platen, lumber magnate; Attorney Steve Halsted; Lamar Trotti, writer and film producer; W. John Kenney, Asst. Secretary of Navy; Frank Butler, screenwriter; songwriter Nacio Herb Brown; Hugh Darling, mayor of Beverly Hills; painter Marge Wilman. Another wealthy “colonist” was Alice Pillsbury Forsman, daughter of the co-founder of the Pillsbury Mills. St. Malo was such a way of life for most, even when they passed away their obituaries mentioned their affection of their St. Malo home away from home.

Other notable residents were film director Jason S. Joy and author Ben Hecht. Joy’s St. Malo home was referred to as “La Garde Joyeuse” and included an outdoor bowling alley and volleyball court. Hecht, whose prolific works include “Scarface”, purchased his St. Malo home in 1950. While living in Oceanside, he wrote a children’s book about a cat who roamed the streets of Oceanside. He said in an interview that he often wrote from his den overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Homes within the colony sold for $57,000 (and up) in the 1940s, however, ownership was contingent upon “membership” and the approval of Kenyon Keith.

Over the years visitors have included Harpo Marx and James Maytag, (Maytag appliances). The most famous and royal visitors were none other than England’s Prince Phillip and Princess Anne, who stayed at St. Malo while attending events during the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984.

No longer quite as exclusive, new families mingle with the more “established” residents. While St. Malo is no longer a secret, it still remains private and the homes behind the gated entrance and those who live there, still evoke a bit of mystery.

Carla & Linda's Walking
Food Tour

Contributing Writer & Photographer: Jordan Younis

It’s no secret that Oceanside has emerged as a shining San Diego culinary mecca. Peppered with countless vibey craft coffee shops, homegrown breweries, and fine and casual dining restaurants, choosing a place to have a meal or a drink is no easy task. Luckily, Carla and Linda’s Walking Food Tours gives diners a small taste of a few local hits all in one curated session.

Carla Werts and Linda Pina have a passion for Oceanside and good cuisine – one that they’ve been sharing with others since 2015. On each tour, Carla and Linda lead a pack of eager eaters to a handful of handpicked local staples, many of which happen to be some of the pair’s favorite restaurants. As a tour member, you will stop at a total of four to five culinary destinations over the course of about three hours, getting a history lesson about the community and the scoop on each spot as you stroll.

Where you stop depends on which tour you choose. Carla and Linda have three Oceanside tour options available, highlighting North O’side, Heart of O’side, and South O.

On the Heart of O’side tour, you’ll enjoy classic American cuisine at Masters and brewery bites from Bagby Beer. The South O tour features dishes from PCH Bar & Grill, the Privateer and more. If you choose the North O’side option, as I did, you’ll meander from the 101 to the city’s trendy downtown, stopping at local favorites like Petite Madeline Bakery for the signature sweet-and-savory Chicken and Waffles Benedict, The Flying Pig for a bowl of hearty bolognese, and Orfila Tasting Room for a glass of delicious wine and a woodfired flatbread. You may also make a stop along the stunning coastline for a taste of Hi/Low’s beachside brunch. In a special twist, we were offered an off-the-menu item and got a brief meet-and-greet with the hotspot’s chef. Little details like this are a testament to Carla and Linda’s relationships within the culinary community, as well as a testament to the downhome, community spirit that permeates the city.

“We want people not only to get a sense of how delicious the food is here in Oceanside, but to get a sense of the community and its people,” Linda explained.

Carla and Linda’s Walking Food Tours give you a sense of all that is Oceanside. Rich in diverse and delicious food and buzzing with communal energy, this food scene is a culinary adventure waiting to be discovered. Let Carla and Linda be your guides along the way! Downtown Oceanside Historical Landmarks https://visitoceanside.org/blog/downtown-oceanside-historical-landmarks/ Tue, 17 May 2022 00:00:00 +0000 https://osiddevelopment.flywheelstaging.com/downtown-oceanside-historical-landmarks/ With its origins dating back to 1888, the City of Oceanside has survived through some of the roughest times in the United States history ultimately blossoming into the vibrant and authentic city we know and love today. Our history is not all lost however, Oceanside still has numerous landmarks dating back well over a century that continue to contribute to the magic that makes our downtown so great. Check out these five special and historically significant landmarks that help make Oceanside, Oceanside.

Downtown Oceanside Historical Landmarks

Those who visit Oceanside today are greeted by a bustling downtown that is both walkable and inviting with its mixture of distinct, vintage and modern aesthetics. With visuals ranging from the Star Theatre’s large iconic neon sign towering over the sidewalk to the more contemporary Oceanplace courtyard, to the fun and eclectic neighborhood atmosphere of South O, there is no shortage of diversity. Oceanside’s unique character goes far beyond its downtown variety however, the best-kept secret about our humble beach city is that it has a rich and fascinating history that continues to be unearthed, brought to light and honored in the downtown more and more!

A Blast From The Past

Oceanside’s origins date clear back to the 1800’s, with its incorporation on July 3, 1888. Starting off as a meager coastal town in close proximity to Mission San Luis Rey, Oceanside developed fairly rapidly opening both the Oceanside Library and Oceanside High School before 1910; with the Oceanside Pier already on its third iteration. In addition to the city projects, locals were establishing their own roots by building their businesses in this new city they called home. Fast forward over a century and Oceanside is doing better than ever, with new developments located alongside buildings dating back to the 1880’s! These historically significant, story-telling buildings are standing proud throughout downtown Oceanside and you’d often be hard pressed to pick them out among the crowd of neighboring structures. Fortunately the City of Oceanside and the Oceanside Historical Society have taken important steps in preserving and honoring these pieces of history. You can even go on your own self guided tour to see Oceanside’s historical gems using the provided map at the bottom of this page.

Though there are many more to see than just these, the following downtown landmarks hold special historical value to the City of Oceanside. Both visitors and locals alike should take the time to visit these places, take in their history, and honor these time capsules as well as recognize Oceanside’s unique system of incorporating the history while continuing to look forward towards the city’s future.

The Graves / Top Gun House

One of the more recognizable historical landmarks in downtown Oceanside is the Graves House, or as most know it, the “Top Gun House.” Built in 1887 by Dr. Henry Graves, this Queen Anne Victorian cottage is one of the oldest houses still standing in Oceanside today. Located on its oceanfront location, this home is significant for a number of reasons. First and foremost the building has folk Victorian architecture which, as John Daley Vice President of the Oceanside Historical Society notes, is extremely rare by the beach. In addition, of those similar buildings that exist it is the best one of its kind in San Diego County making it very special historically. The other significance has to do with it being featured in the cult classic blockbuster movie Top Gun.

Almost a century after being built, the Graves House was selected to be the home of character Charlotte ‘Charlie’ Blackwood, the love interest of Tom Cruise’s character Maverick in the 1986 mega film Top Gun. The house got plenty of screen time in the film and has become a favorite tourist spot to visit, so much so a fence was built around it to help preserve the 130+ year old building. As time has passed, nature took its toll on the Graves House which resulted in mini-restorations and improvements over the years to keep it standing.

The Graves or Top Gun House illustrates a perfect example of Oceanside’s unique attitude towards not only maintaining those remaining buildings from the city’s early years, but going beyond that and incorporating them as special additions to Oceanside’s downtown landscape for the foreseeable future. With construction of the Seabird Resort and Mission Pacific Hotel, the Top Gun House was carefully lifted and relocated so that it could be restored to it’s former glory, and given new life within the completed resort grounds as the HIGH-Pie Dessert Shop.

The Graves House Location:

As the new home of HIGH-Pie, the house maintains its original blue Victorian cottage exterior, with billowing sheer curtains on the windows lining an outdoor porch with a hanging swing. Tara Lazar and her creative team embraced the history and the true American military and film nostalgia with a fresh touch of “New Americana.” The renovated interior is adorned with bold, retro signage, Victorian era panels and an upholstered fireplace. Fun design touches such as Top Gun set photos, historical imagery of both Oceanside and the Graves House, vintage furniture and more. The serving counter has deli-style display cases and shelves, and pies are featured on a Willy-Wonka-esque conveyor belt.

The Schuyler Building

A perfect example of a hidden gem in plain sight is the Schuyler building, a once-prominent fixture in the early days of Oceanside which has since been relegated to a row of other similar looking buildings….that is, until now!

Built in 1888 by John Schuyler, this originally two-story building was home to the Schuyler Hardware store, a historically significant business that enabled more development to take place in the early years helping pave way for the fantastic growth we see today. Back in its original state, the Schuyler building stood proud with its brick exterior and large over-sized ceilings, and over most of its life up until fairly recently, the building continued to retain most of its prowess. Slight changes did occur, like being converted to a three-story building by reducing the ceilings, and various businesses such as a cash grocery store that occupied the building in the 1930’s also added their own touch.

The building seemed little more than an eyesore to many in the downtown area but in 2017 the Aldrich family purchased the former hotel with eyes to refurbishing and repurposing it as a boutique hotel. Thomas Aldrich, project manager and his sister Lauren Sweeton, hotel manager, are the great-great grandchildren of John and Jeanie Aldrich who came to Oceanside in 1926 from Connecticut. The early Aldrich’s purchased a large two-story house at 615 Second Street (now Mission Avenue), and opened a boarding house referred to as Aldrich Manor. As renovation of the Schuyler building began, the stucco was painstaking removed, slowly exposing the original brick exterior which had been hidden for decades. Emerging was the painted ad of grocers Contreras & Gelpi on the eastside of the building, along the roofline the faded words “Rooms”, harkening back to its day as a boarding house and hotel.

Schuyler Building Location:

Historic names were considered but it seemed fitting to give it its own identity and the decision was made to call it “The Brick Hotel.”  The restoration became a rebuilding project that spanned a five-year period and included earthquake retrofitting which required building a modern steel structure inside of the existing brick walls.

The Aldrich Family, in Oceanside for nearly 100 years, continues their legacy and early roots in the hospitality business. Their collective vision for this building has transformed and revitalized the block on which it sits. When completed, it will be modernly updated, both inside and out while retaining much of its historic charm and character. The Brick Hotel will offer ten beautifully appointed suites, as well as a restaurant and oyster bar on the ground floor, and a rooftop bar providing panoramic views of the city.

The Bunker House

The Bunker House is another building in downtown Oceanside with a past that dates back to the 1800’s. Built a few years prior to the Schuyler Building in 1886, this large two story structure was built by Theodore Bunker and was declared the ornament of the town at the time by the San Diego Union. Despite going through many hands, the building lived on eventually being named the Travelers Hotel in 1947 by its owner Ralph Rogers.

The Bunker House was many things, it was used for town hall meetings, dances, church services, it was a music store leasing jukeboxes, and even a brothel in the 70s. This building’s unique past has adapted and changed with it’s community and is one of the three only standing brick buildings in Oceanside. The Bunker House Lounge, who operates the building now, hopes to bring the community together again to eat, drink, socialize, enjoy live music, and create new stories to add to this beautiful building’s vibrant history.

Bunker House Location:

The Bunker House serves as the subject of a wonderful juxtaposition between the rows of modern vacation rentals located across the street and Oceanside’s humble beginnings in which such a building was considered the crown jewel of the town. Standing proud closely resembling the original exterior facade, this historical landmark helps keep Oceanside’s initial character at the forefront and helps to ground the city in its roots as it naturally progresses forward as the premier beach destination.

The Fin Hotel

The Fin Hotel, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, formerly the Dolphin Hotel, originally opened its doors in 1927 and was a popular hotel for celebrities of the day during the 1930s and 1940s. Fast forward to May 2018, after undergoing extensive renovations, the property reopened as a luxe boutique hotel blending Oceanside’s history with the modern surf culture.

With a modern and clean decor, this 27-room property also retains much of the building’s original character including multi-colored, mosaic tile flooring in the lobby, a grand wooden-railed staircase, and elegant tiffany windows.

The Oceanside Pier

The most visible but often overlooked historical landmark in the downtown neighborhood is the Oceanside Pier. Like the other historical sites mentioned, the first iteration of the pier was built in the late 1880’s. The first version was built by the American Bridge Company entirely out of wood reaching a reported 1,200 feet out from the shore. Not long after its completion, a storm in 1890 destroyed nearly all of the pier requiring a major rebuild. This rebuild eventually took place in 1894 utilizing iron pilings to strengthen the pier with an extension added on in 1896, but eventually that too was destroyed by heavy storms in 1902. It wasn’t until 1926 that the fourth pier was built, which famously drew over 20,000 people from all over Southern California to celebrate the grand opening. For the entirety of the pier’s life storms have taken a toll, but regardless of the damage done the pier has always been rebuilt as a testament to the strength and steadfastness of the City of Oceanside.

Oceanside Pier Location:

The sixth version of the pier opened in 1987 at a cost of $5 million dollars and is what you see today. The pier currently measures 1,942 feet long making it one of the longest wooden piers on the West Coast. The pier, in all of its iterations, has always helped shape Oceanside’s image as the place to go if you want to enjoy great weather and the beach. Unlike neighboring beach cities, visitors and locals alike can walk far out over the Pacific Ocean to watch surfing and sea life from a unique vantage point, and even fish without needing a permit. These advantages have always been intrinsic to Oceanside since 1888 when the first pier was built, which makes this landmark one of the most historically significant gems in the City of Oceanside.

Roberts Cottages

Roberts Cottages is a community of individually owned cottage residences located in Oceanside. The vacant property was initially purchased by A.J. Clark in 1925. A few years later, he secured a permit to build 24 beach cottages for a projected cost of $25,000. The cottages were designed and built by the Whiting-Mead Company and were completed in July 1928. Around this time, Oceanside was on its way to reaching new heights in development and growth. Detached garages in the rear of many downtown homes were converted to small houses or apartments to accommodate the growing population. Trailer parks that were once used by tourists and summer visitors now were used as permanent homes due to the housing shortage.

In 1941, Harry and Virginia Roberts acquired the iconic double row of (mostly) pink cottages and gave them their present name. They passed through a few owners until 1952 when H. D. and Rush Forquer took over. The Forquers attempted to sell all the cottages as a single unit and failed, however, real estate agent Wilma Stakich suggested that the 12-by-24 foot cottages be sold individually to various owners. This was supposedly one of the first times this type of condo concept was used in the state of California.

These quaint buildings represent an important part of Oceanside’s history. They are remnants of a time when Oceanside figured prominently on motor Route 101 running directly through the city, as well as being walking distance to the railroad and thus attracting many part-time residents from Los Angeles. Today many of them are available for week long rental.

The above image showcases Cottage City in the 1930’s at 600 N Strand. Even though it looks similar, this is not the current Roberts Cottages! Cottage City was built with wood and Roberts Cottages are built with stucco.
