Oceanside Proposals

10 ways to ‘Say YES’ in Oceanside

Love is in the air! Valentine’s Day is one of the most popular times to propose and if you’re thinking of proposing in Oceanside, we have just the inspiration you need. Here are some ideas to get you started. If you already got engaged in Oceanside, we’d love to hear about the big romantic moment. Please share your stories with us by tagging @visitoceanside on social media or by emailing us your stories and proposal photos at groups@visitoceanside.org. Let us include your story in an upcoming blog!

1. Oceanside Pier

Okay, so maybe the Oceanside Pier tops all of our lists in Oceanside, but when a pier is this majestic and beautiful, how can it not? There is no better place to catch a sunset and then drop to one knee and ask for your beloved’s hand in marriage. Just please hold tight to that ring if you’re proposing on the actual pier.

Proposal: The Oceanside Pier is popular for fishing. If you do not have your own supplies, check in with the Oceanside Pier Bait Shop, located halfway down the pier, to rent your fishing poles, get bait, and your license. When your significant other isn’t looking, tie a fake ring onto the fishing hook and gently cast into the water (no overhead casting at the pier). Hand the pole to your partner. After a few minutes, “notice” that the bait came off, and then have them reel it in. At the confused moment, when they’re looking at the fake ring at the end of the hook, you produce the real one.

Tip: When there is a negative low tide, the glassy sand under the pier makes for stunning photos.

2. Oceanside Harbor

Oceanside Harbor has several options for your ocean proposal. You can rent and pilot your own vessel through Oceanside Boat Rentals. They have kayaks, sailboats, pedal boats, power boats, electric boats, and more. If you prefer to sit back and have all of the arrangements made for you, several boat charters out of Oceanside Harbor offer these services and overnight excursions.

Proposal: (KISS) Keep IShort & Sweet with a bottle of champagne, a ring, and a question.

Tip: Book your dinner reservation at the Oceanside Broiler. Its waterfront location makes a romantic spot to celebrate a “yes”.

3. Harbor Beach Jetty

Say you’ll follow your love to the ends of the Earth. This is not the end of the road, but the beginning to a new horizon. This Jetty is located at the north end of Harbor Beach bordering Oceanside Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. Weather and time of year are very important as it can be very windy with rough seas. Stay off the jetty in high surf conditions. Video: Sweet proposal by Joel to Alanna in the rain at the Oceanside Harbor.

Proposal: Imagine the two of you are walking along the jetty when all of a sudden you spot a bottle nestled in the rocks with a message inside. Astonished, you urge your fiancé to open the bottle and retrieve the note; a romantic marriage proposal from you.

Tip: Procure a friend to hide the bottle in a mutually selected area. Have them hide it just before you’re supposed to arrive. Be very careful for the bottle not to be washed away, polluting our waters.

4. Enchanting and Historic

For the spiritual couple, there is a certain reverence as you walk the hallowed grounds of Mission San Luis Rey.  Start your lifetime together with the blessings of the spirits of the padres of the past.

Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, the “King of the Missions,” is the 18th and largest in a chain of 21 California Missions established by the Spanish Franciscans in 1798. Areas of Mission San Luis Rey are off-limits to the public so check ahead before solidifying your plans.

Proposal: After your tour of the Mission, head over to Heritage Park where you’ve arranged a dinner for two. Hire a caterer to set the scene with a fully decorated table, candles and a floral centerpiece under the park’s gazebo. Hire a musician to softly play in the background. For the last course, have the server present the ring on a covered tray. Note: This will take considerable coordination between you, City of Oceanside’s Park and Recreation, and your caterer, so plan accordingly, but this epic proposal is one for the history books.

5. GoJUMP Coastal Skydiving

The couple that jumps together, stays together. The GoJump Oceanside team will be in the know from check in to landing and quietly help support all the logistics. The inside photo and videos are professionally edited photos and videos of your experience with footage taken from a camera mounted on the hand of your tandem master.

Proposal: GoJump Oceanside has a engagement package and will take care of all of the details for you! Have your friends and family hidden away and then after take-off, have them directed out to the drop zone (DZ if you want to sound cool) to cheer as you descend!! Make sure that you’re out of the plane first, so you’re on the ground in time to grab the ring from a trusted friend and “drop” to one knee.

6. Junior Seau Oceanside Pier Amphitheater

The Junior Seau Pier Amphitheater became a part of pop-culture history when it was featured at the end of the movie Bring It On (2000). The Oceanside Bandshell (its original name) was constructed in 1937 as a project of the federal Works Progress Administration and significantly altered in 1950 with its current art deco design. Today, the amphitheater hosts events, concerts, activities, festivals, and competitions throughout the year.

Proposal: During the summer, the City of Oceanside hosts Movie Night at the Pier. Check with the organizers to see if you can insert your own personal trailer like the guy above (grab a tissue): All together now…Awwwwwwwe. You can also look into renting the our own historic Star Theatre or Brooke’s Theatre.

7. Rent a Vacation Rental

Oceanside is home to several beach front vacation rentals that are large enough to hold multiple families all together. Beachfront Only vacation rentals are all directly on the ocean. Whether you are looking for a charming one bedroom beach bungalow on the sand for a romantic getaway, or a ten bedroom oceanfront luxurious mansion for your entire family, they are sure to have the place for you! Please check with your accommodations before planning any group gathering as many of them have restrictions as to what is permitted.

Proposal: Here is something different. This bride and groom had already been secretly engaged while stealthily planning a small intimate wedding. The groom gathered all of their friends and family at a beach front vacation rental on the premise that he was going to propose. After she accepted, they announced to their guests that they have actually been gathered to witness their wedding. (Tears ensue)

Tip: Make sure your significant other is in on the surprise.  Not everyone will appreciate having a wedding sprung on them without warning.

8. Downtown Scavenger Hunt

When it comes to walking throughout Downtown Oceanside, there are so many places to explore, murals to see, sculptures, architecture, historical buildings, amazing restaurants, and let’s not forget the breweries and wine tasting rooms.

Proposal: Use the video above to be inspired to create a scavenger hunt throughout town that either ends on the pier or on the beach. Have your group of family and friends waiting at the end to help with the surprise. If the thought of putting together a scavenger hunt is daunting, we are frequent hosts to teambuilding companies that have already created fun itineraries for Downtown Oceanside. Reach out to us and let us give you a hand.

9. Oceanside Museum of Art

Oceanside Museum of Art is a premier regional art museum and a leader of arts and culture in San Diego. In addition to several highly praised contemporary art exhibitions per year, museum programming includes classes, lectures, docent tours, parties, concerts, films, culinary events, and chartered travel to other cultural art venues and destinations.

Proposal: In the classic 80’s movie, Some Kind of Wonderful, Kevin takes his date Amanda to the museum after hours where he surprises her with a portrait of her hanging in the gallery that he painted. It’s OK, if you’re not a talented painter.  Simply watch the video above and create your own photo gallery of your lives together up to that point. Contact the Oceanside Museum of Art for availability of your exhibit.

10. Love Locks

The Love the O interactive sculpture proposal, created by Randall Art Ranch has been a feature at the Oceanside Harbor since late 2022. The metal sculpture is installed between the Oceanside Harbor and Harbor Beach (Lot 11) for the community to create a lasting connection and celebrate a commitment by placing a personal lock on the sculpture. Engraved locks, or ones simply marked for sentimental meaning to celebrate a birth, a marriage, a loved one, or a special occasion can be hung and revisited.

The 10’ x 10’ sculpture is fabricated with Corten steel. Sometimes called weathering steel, the metal is designed to develop a protective weathered surface which ages to a rusty, earthy look without losing its durability due to the salty sea air.

You’ve dreamed of the sun setting in the background, cool breezes in your hair, the smell of the salted sea, and your toes in the sand. Beach Wedding 101

Welcome to O’side, where wedding dreams dance with the rhythm of the warm sun, caressed by the gentle touch of cool coastal breezes. Here, beneath the endless blue skies, you’ll find a place where sandy toes and salty kisses intertwine, creating memories that will forever linger in your heart. We have crafted this blog to guide you in assembling the most charming beach wedding experience. We understand that the beach holds a unique allure, and we want to ensure that your celebration remains flawless, without any unexpected surprises.

Oceanside Beach Weddings

Looking to tie the knot on the sun-kissed shores of Oceanside? We’ve got you covered with the ultimate beach wedding destinations! The number one spot on our list is the breathtaking Oceanside Harbor Beach, where ample stretches of sand await you. Plus, parking is a breeze with plenty of options, including free parking just a short stroll away. It’s the perfect choice for vendors to set up and create your dream ceremony.

For a more secluded vibe, our second recommendation is North of the Pier, off Breakwater Way. Guests will find easy access from the parking lot conveniently located at the corner of Breakwater and Pacific. And while Buccaneer Beach may be a hidden gem, it’s worth noting that weddings aren’t permitted there due to its size.

Now, let’s talk permits. Most likely, you’ll need one for your beachfront celebration. Please keep in mind that permits are not issued by the City of Oceanside between May 15 and September 15, as our beaches are buzzing with activity during that peak season. To secure your permit, you can apply up to a year in advance but make sure to do so at least 60 days prior to your chosen date. Keep in mind that certain dates might already be taken due to other permitted events, so a little flexibility is key.

If your guest list is under 25 and you’re envisioning a simple, walk-up ceremony lasting no more than 30 minutes, you’re in luck! You can choose any spot on the beach, at any time, without the need for set-up. That means no chairs, arches, equipment, decorations, tenting, or amplified music. However, please note that all reception activities will always require a permit.

So, get ready to embark on a beachy adventure as you exchange vows with the sand beneath your toes and the ocean breeze caressing your love-filled hearts. Oceanside welcomes you to create lifelong memories in the most laid-back and inviting coastal atmosphere.

To start the application process, complete the Beach Application form on the City of Oceanside website to book your beach wedding in Oceanside.

Green Oceanside Wedding: Zero Waste Wedding Tips https://visitoceanside.org/blog/green-oceanside-wedding-celebrating-in-eco-friendly-style/ Wed, 24 Feb 2021 00:00:00 +0000 https://osiddevelopment.flywheelstaging.com/green-oceanside-wedding-celebrating-in-eco-friendly-style/ Did you know that Oceanside is on the Road to Zero Waste with a goal of reaching a 75-90% diversion/recycling rate by 2020? If you’re passionate about the environment, here are ways to make your wedding more eco-friendly in Oceanside.

Green Oceanside Wedding

Zero Waste Wedding Tips

If you’re passionate about the environment, here are ways to make your wedding more eco-friendly in Oceanside.

Choose invitations made from recycled paper and select vegetable base dyes. Reduce the amount of paper you use and ditch the inner envelope by having your guests RSVP online. Of course, you could send out evites if you’re not worried about the etiquette police. In San Diego, check out Green Field Paper, creating eco-friendly papers with a purpose.

Find a venue that fits your style so you don’t need to do over-the-top decorations. Use lighting or reusable fabric to add that special touch, but paper tissue products like Chinese lanterns and pom poms should be reconsidered.  Also, ask your venue what steps they take to help reduce, reuse, recycle as well as water conservation.

Centerpieces and Decorations

Visit your local resale shop and find fun mismatched vases, jars, and tins to hold flowers that are currently in-season and purchased from your local organic grower. Avoid over Pinteresting your wedding and leave out items like fabric pennants (unless made from scrap material) and disposable tulle.  Absolutely NO Balloons. #balloonsblow

Rent washable place settings, flatware, glassware and linens or go for the eclectic look and buy china in all different patterns from a resale store. Don’t forget to consider your barware too as anything thrown away goes into our landfills.

There are local caterers that are paving the way for farm to table cuisine. This means that they’re going the extra mile to make sure that all of their ingredients are locally sourced. O’side Kitchen Collaborative is a leader in eco-friendly catering and supports zero waste efforts by partnering with local farms and food businesses. They divert and rescue fresh produce and work them into their menus! Their goal is to provide the community with clear direction keeping healthy food on peoples’ plates and out of the landfill!

Favors

Consider edible favors like chocolates or caramels, or something that can be planted like seeds or succulents, but make sure to forego the cute packaging, labels and ribbons. Look for handcrafted items like candles made from soy wax, scented with essential oils, or 100% natural handmade soaps.

You could also have a donation station where instead of the guests leaving with a favor, they choose a charity where you’ll donate in their name. So instead of paying $3 for a favor, you’re donating $3 to one of your favorite causes. Check out this “How to” by the Off-Beat Bride.

Recycle

This one seems obvious, but it’s often overlooked. Many venues only have a single dumpster and aren’t taking the time to recycle. This is especially true if your caterer is required to take the trash off-site. Do not assume recycling is being done. You must ask everyone involved and be sure they understand that how we treat the planet is important to us all.

Compost

It isn’t pretty, but approximately 40% of San Diego’s landfill is organic material, including food scraps. This leads to an increase in methane, a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. In contrast, composting this material creates a valuable soil enhancer that replenishes depleted soils, protects against erosion, can replace synthetic fertilizers and helps retain water. Composting our organics protects air, water and soil quality. Learn about composting and more ways to recycle during Oceanside’s Earth Month Celebration.

Estate Jewelry

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something reused. Shopping at estate sales or stores that deal in estate jewelry is a fun way to help the environment.  Who doesn’t love a good treasure hunt? Check out our fun boutique and resale stores in Oceanside!

7 Reasons to Have an Estate Wedding

If you’re planning a wedding, you probably have a pretty clear picture on the type of wedding that you’d like to have.  If your vision includes privacy, a garden setting, twinkle lights, and fountains, consider looking into a private wedding estate.  Here are 7 reasons to have an estate wedding.

1. Privacy

Estate weddings tend to be a little off the beaten path and usually the public has no reason to be there other than to attend your event, so the risk of onlookers or party crashers is drastically reduced.

2. Landscaping

The beauty of nature doesn’t need decorating, just to be cared for. Because event estates are generally only in the business to service weddings, they understand the overall experience that couples are looking for. This means manicured grounds with the flora and fauna being chosen to match most themes and décor schemes with photography opportunities in mind.

3. The Planners

Most event estates come with full packages and planner, and while this may come with a higher price tag, this also means stress-free planning for you. There is comfort in knowing that your planner is well experienced with the venue and can refer you to tried and true vendors who they’ve worked with in the past.

4. More Flexibility

Do you want your dog as your ring bearer or make your entrance in a horse drawn carriage? How about a getaway in a sweet ride. Chances are you’re going to have better luck doing these kinds of things at a private estate. Rules are rules though, so always check with the venue first, especially before dropping cash on an elephant.

5. A Different Kind of Reception

Estates don’t box you and allow you to creatively think on how to use a space. Consider setting up lawn games, have a s’more bar next to a fire pit, spread out blankets for a picnic, bring the grills for a backyard BBQ; you’re only limited by your imagination and what the estate allows.

6. One a Day

You usually have exclusive use of the property when renting an estate for a wedding so you won’t be impeded by someone else’s timeline or having to deal with double bookings. There are even venues that have multiple weddings happening at the same time. In those cases, you’re guaranteed to either have your guests accidentally wander into someone else’s wedding or end up with a few confused attendees yourself.

7. Only Light Decorating Needed

Use nature’s surroundings by adding twinkle lights or mossy chandeliers.

Located in the agricultural center of Oceanside, Botanica, is one of the best-kept secrets for a North San Diego County Wedding. Event or Banquet. Everyone who has visited this dream wedding location has experience the magic of being transported to our own slice of paradise, as you leave the real world at the gates and enter a lush cascading waterfalls and picturesque gardens area a photographer’s dream. There are twinkle lit trees at every turn and a grand tented pavilion onsite. You’ll enjoy the sights and sounds of the tropics the moment you enter the gates to paradise. Read More about Botanica.

Love Unleashed

Yes, you can plan the perfect wedding in Oceanside, California and include your dog! Idyllic weather conditions make Oceanside suitable for an outdoor wedding most anytime of the year. While dogs are not allowed “on the beach,” Oceanside is a dog-walking town with a scenic boardwalk, pet-friendly microbreweries and restaurants. Couples can choose from a variety of pet-welcoming hotels and other properties to host their wedding ceremony, reception and stay.

Weddings can be stressful for all involved, especially pets who are keenly intuitive to their owner’s feelings. If you are willing to consider your dog’s needs front and center, use these tips to plan a pet-friendly wedding with unrivaled tail-wagging!

1. Use Your Best Judgment.

Does your dog revel around people, new sites and sounds? Is his/her age and temperament well-suited to the commotion of a wedding? Be honest. As you visit venues, take your leashed pet with you and monitor your shared experience and reactions before you make a final decision.

2. Choose Carefully.

Not only will you need a pet-friendly venue, you’ll want a wedding planner, officiant, and photographer who are smitten by your pooch.  Before you book your wedding venue, inquire about additional costs or permits required for including a dog.  Also, let your bridemaids and groomsmen know that as loving pet parents, your hound will be part of your wedding day.  You don’t want anyone who is nervous around animals in your wedding-day pack.

Looking for a dog-friendly wedding venue in Oceanside? Start your search with our Wedding and Event Guide.

3. Everyone Needs a Job.

Decide on the dog’s role in your wedding: Trusted friend, greeter, or ring bearer – the job should be a natural fit. For example, a pup that is easily distracted or doesn’t like to release his/her ball during play should probably not be a ring bearer.  Another great choice is including a furry friend in the getting-ready room, calming the bride’s nerves or outdoors playing with the groom and his groomsman. All will make for great photos and provide treasured memories. And, don’t forget to devote time familiarizing the dog with the environment, training and rehearsing the activities for a dog-smiling day.

4. Plan, Plan and Plan.

Including your dog in your wedding day was most likely an easy decision to make.  The rest of your choices may not be as straight forward. Plan to relax and enjoy your wedding to its fullest by hiring an experienced event planner that can assist you with making informed and creative decisions. Whoever you hire should love the idea of including your pet in your special day as much as you do!

5. Dedicated Care.

Your dog will definitely need his or her own caregiver. Select a trustworthy friend or a trained handler to be responsible for your pet. This person will be responsible for the dog’s safe transportation to and from the wedding, his/her wedding day tasks, as well as potty breaks, exercise and food. In most cases, it is ill-advised to include the dog in the reception. Dogs perceive the world through smell, and the combination of new scents, food, loud music, and dancing during the reception could be a source of unnecessary stress.

6. Communicate.

Share your decision to include your pet in your wedding with your guests. Those who suffer from allergies or may be fearful of dogs can make informed decisions and take necessary precautions. In addition, although your pet may be permitted to be on property, in most cases, your guests should leave their pets at home.Too often have I roamed parking lots during events to find beloved dogs that were turned away at the door to be left behind in hot cars.

If you plan to include your pooch, don’t forget to play up the theme. Check out these fun ways to show your love for all things canine at your wedding.

8 Pro Tips for Surviving a Wedding Show

Wedding shows can be a fun and bonding experience either with your betrothed or your wedding party, and you can get so much checked off of your to-do list. It can also be a bit overwhelming. If you’re planning to attend the San Diego Bridal Bazaar or the Wedding Show Weekend at El Camino Country Club be sure to read these pro tips first!

#1 – Wedding Email. Create an email address specifically for your wedding so you can keep all wedding related messages together. At wedding shows, you’re going to be signing up to win prizes, receive additional information, or make follow up appointments. Tip: Never use your work email.

#2 – Address Labels.  Print out small address labels with your name, mailing address, email address and wedding date or approximate wedding date. Phone number is optional. This makes signing up for the free offers go much faster. Sign up for everything, at every booth, as long as you want/need what they’re offering. (Don’t forget to check your SPAM folder a few weeks later in case there is a prize notification hanging out in there.) Many vendors will send everyone that signs up a special show discount so don’t skip this step.

#3 – Go with a plan. What is your goal while you’re there? Do you want to just “experience” the Bridal Show as a rite of passage or do you meet vendors that you’ll want to hire?  If the latter, then come ready with a list of things that you need to book (cake, caterer, stylist, etc) and questions that you’ll want to ask. When you first arrive, you’ll receive a show booklet listing the vendors by category, their locations, and a map. If you’re short on time, use the map to plan your rounds. Don’t expect to book vendors onsite, but do plan to make follow up appointments so have your calendar at the ready.

#4 – Colored Stickers. It’s going to be tough remembering everyone you meet.  You’re not going to have a lot of time to make detailed notes.  Have three colored stickers to quickly add to the marketing material that you’re given.  For example: Green (Loved them, set appointment), Yellow (Liked them, need more research). Red (Not for me).  Make any notes or observations on their literature. This will greatly help when you empty out your bag of stuff when you get home. You won’t have to rely on your memory.

#5 – Have your camera ready.  Take photos of displays that you like or color combinations that catch your eye. Make sure you ask the exhibitor’s permission. Photos are a great way to remember whose work that you liked best. Also, be sure to tag vendors and the show when sharing photos to your social media streams. They’ll appreciate the love.

#6 – Prepare yourself. Wear comfortable shoes, dress in layers, bring water and energy bars. You’ll be given a bag to hold your goodies, but if you prefer, bring your own backpack or tote bag. There is usually food to purchase but the lines tend to be long and it can be pricey. Less and less caterers are bringing full samples so that probably won’t fill you up, unless you plan on sampling all of the cake and desserts.

#7 – Try and find a sitter. I know how tough this can be and of course children are welcome, however stroller navigation is very tough in crowds and tight aisles and older kids will get bored pretty quickly. They will also want to try every sweet tasty thing being handed out which can have disastrous consequences.

#8 – Arrive early. The shows tend to get busier as the day progresses.  If you want to sail on through, arrive at the show opening and start in the BACK and work your way forward. Note: If you want get a complimentary up-do, make up, or lashes, hit those first. They usually have a sign up sheet with appointment times throughout the day and those can get booked up pretty quickly.

Don’t forget to Relax and Enjoy! This is the fun stuff!

Beaches, Bikes, and Besties: A Girlfriend Getaway to Oceanside

Whether its for a bachelorette party, a baby shower, or that you simply need to getaway and laugh with your friends, there are many reasons to pick a date and get together for a girlfriend getaway. Jamie Wade, an aesthetician in New Hampshire, recently invited her girlfriends, who live in different parts of the country, to join her for a destination getaway in Oceanside to celebrate her 40th birthday.  Their three day vacay included a stay at a private home near the Oceanside community of South Morro Hills, a day at Oceanside beaches, and a themed dinner party.

Jamie wanted to make sure the girls had all of the supplies needed for their fun in the sun and put together swag bags that included sunscreen and towels. The girls then began their day in Oceanside with bike rentals where they cruised by the Top Gun House and then cycled down the Strand. They enjoyed a catered lunch set up for them by Details Defined where they toasted the birthday girl and shared endless laughs. Jamie hired local photographer Tatiana M Photography to capture the special moments of the day as well as get in a fun little photo shoot. What a special way to remember their time in Oceanside!

Thank you for sharing your photos with us on Facebook, Jamie! We really enjoyed seeing how you and your friends played in Oceanside.
