Contributing Writer & Photographer: Jefferson Graham, @PhotowalksTV

We tapped iPhone expert, Jefferson Graham for tips on snapping O’side like a pro. Jeff is a former USA TODAY tech columnist, host and podcaster, where he fronted the “Talking Tech” series over 2,000 episodes until 2021. He now hosts “PhotowalksTV” travel photography series on YouTube, Amazon Prime, Roku and Tubi & “iPhone Photo Show” podcast. Watch his photography tour here or read on for an insider guide that will ensure you leave Oceanside with stunning photos that will impress your friends!

Did you know that O’side is one of the most photogenic of the North San Diego beach cities? It’s got the historic downtown, which dates back to 1888, along with surf and beach culture, fabulous murals seemingly everywhere you look, a historic former movie palace, a fun harborfront with sea lions and pelicans who are happy to pose for photos and California’s largest Mission.

How’s that for beefing up your Instagram? Here are 7 of the best places for photos on your phone.

Artist alley

hr-wave

(212 Artist Alley Lane) is a great place to start to pose by dozens of murals. Remember to use Portrait Mode on your phone to blur the background–otherwise, people will just blend into the mural. For the classic “Greetings from Oceanside” mural that looks like a 1950s postcard, the place for that is the Seahive antique mall parking lot, 1555 Coast Highway.

The Star Theatre

hr-wave

The beautiful Star Theatre is across the street from Artist Alley on 402 Coast Highway. The theatre, now a home for theatrical productions, has a massive marquee that can be blocked by a street light. Tip: put your phone on .5 for ultra-wide and stand right underneath to fit it in, without the distractions.

Historic Sites

hr-wave

Local color: Downtown O’side is awash in the historic (the lovingly restored Brick Hotel, circa 1880s) and Top Gun House (as seen in the original movie) dozens of retro barber shops and many new, upscale bakeries, breweries and the like. Have fun juxtaposing the two different eras together downtown.

Oceanside Pier

hr-wave

The Pier is the centerpiece of downtown and stepping out along it is a great place to look down and get shots of the crashing waves and surfers riding them. For a great shot of the pier itself, try standing to the left of it, at sunset and get it just after the sun shine through it.

Roberts Cottages

hr-wave

Down off the Strand are the Roberts Cottages, a row of tiny little bungalows built in 1928 and still standing (and available for weekly rentals) today. They make a great shot, especially if you climb the stairs nearby and look down.

Oceanside Harbor

hr-wave

You can walk to this next spot from the pier, about two miles away, or take a short drive to the Harbor. This is the home of boating activities and getting your best shots of marine life, who tend to come out early in the morning. Remember not to approach the Sea Lions, as they are faster than they look!

Mission san luis rey

hr-wave

Mission San Luis Rey, set four miles from town, is worth the drive to see the expanse of the building set against the impressive lawn.

Fishing with the Family: A Perfect Oceanside Adventure

It isn’t hard to find something to do in Oceanside, but it can be tricky to find something that appeals to the whole family. One activity you can suggest is fishing; most kids love the idea of fishing even if they’ve never tried it before!

The best way to make your fishing experience a memorable one is to of course make sure you catch fish. While you can never guarantee any fishing trip will be a successful one, you can implement the following strategies to help increase your kids’ odds of reeling in some fish. So before you go check out these great spots and strategies for fishing in Oceanside!

Select a Suitable Location

Finding the fish is often one of the most challenging parts of any angler outing, but that’s not much of an issue in Oceanside. Assuming you don’t plan to hire a guide or climb aboard a charter, you basically have three options: You can fish from the beach, or you can fish from either of the two local piers  the Oceanside Municipal Fishing Pier or the Oceanside Harbor Fishing Pier. You may need to walk up and down the pier a little, or drift down the beach until you find a productive location, but you won’t spend all day searching for fish!

You can catch plenty of fish from either location (more on that below), but each offers a different and unique type of experience. Fishing from the beach will give you a little more elbow room, and your kids can run on the beach or build a sandcastle if they need a break. On the other hand, pier fishing tends to be a bit more crowded but this also means that your kids are likely to see people catch some pretty cool fish!

Target Abundant Species

One of the most important things to do is recognize the locally abundant species, and target them specifically. When fishing from the beach you’ll want to target croakers and surfperch which are plentiful off the shore. You may also catch the odd stingray or smooth hound shark as well, which will certainly impress the kids!

More: Unique and Unexpected Things to do in Oceanside

While there are plenty of fish to be caught within casting distance of the shore, the pier provides ample access to fairly deep water. You’ll still be able to catch various croakers from the pier, but you’ll also have the chance to catch sand bass, butterfish and halibut. If you make your way out to the very end of the pier you might also have the chance to catch mackerel, bonito, kelp bass and rockfish. If you are really lucky you might even reel in a barracuda!

Use Equipment Suited for Your Kids

Set your kids up for success by providing them with a rod and reel they can handle competently. This means avoiding bait casting reels in favor of spinning reels, and using rods that are a little shorter than average. You can find appropriate rods and other tackle in a variety of area stores, or you can just rent the necessary equipment from the pier’s tackle shop (the staff can also help answer any questions you may have and point you in the right direction).

Don’t worry about using fancy artificial lures when teaching your kids to fish. Most of the inshore fish in Oceanside can be caught with a basic sinker rig, baited with mussels, bloodworms or pieces of cut mackerel. The Pier Bait Shop stocks several different baits that you can purchase as well, and because they keep track of what the fish are biting most you are sure to have the right bait for the job!

Licenses and More

If you plan on fishing in Oceanside be sure to stay on the right side of the law – you don’t want to set a bad example for your youngsters. You and your spouse and any kids over 16 will need a fishing license to fish legally from any location besides the public Oceanside Pier’s. Children under the age of 16 are free to fish without any license regardless of location. Check with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to find more information including current prices and how to purchase your licenses.

If you want to learn more about the best ways to catch fish with your kids, check out Outdoor Empire’s review of the subject. There you can learn about the best equipment and baits for your kids, as well as tips on selecting good locations and targeting the species that are the easiest to catch.

Beaches, Bikes, and Besties: A Girlfriend Getaway to Oceanside

Whether its for a bachelorette party, a baby shower, or that you simply need to getaway and laugh with your friends, there are many reasons to pick a date and get together for a girlfriend getaway. Jamie Wade, an aesthetician in New Hampshire, recently invited her girlfriends, who live in different parts of the country, to join her for a destination getaway in Oceanside to celebrate her 40th birthday.  Their three day vacay included a stay at a private home near the Oceanside community of South Morro Hills, a day at Oceanside beaches, and a themed dinner party.

Jamie wanted to make sure the girls had all of the supplies needed for their fun in the sun and put together swag bags that included sunscreen and towels. The girls then began their day in Oceanside with bike rentals where they cruised by the Top Gun House and then cycled down the Strand. They enjoyed a catered lunch set up for them by Details Defined where they toasted the birthday girl and shared endless laughs. Jamie hired local photographer Tatiana M Photography to capture the special moments of the day as well as get in a fun little photo shoot. What a special way to remember their time in Oceanside!

Thank you for sharing your photos with us on Facebook, Jamie! We really enjoyed seeing how you and your friends played in Oceanside.

Fun on the San Luis Rey Bike Trail

A family heads to Oceanside for a day of discovery and a bit of a history lesson
By Alyssa Guttendorf

When my husband, John, had suggested we take the kids to Oceanside for a weekend away, I envisioned a relaxing day of sunbathing. But John had something else in mind: a bike ride to visit the historic San Luis Rey Mission. Actually, architecture, great weather and ocean views sounded good to me. It wasn’t every day we got to see the ocean. Melanie and Ryan, our 16-year-old twins, would love their dad’s idea.

Getting up to speed

We arrived in Oceanside in the early afternoon to rent bikes. After getting equipped, we took off to find the bike path entrance to the San Luis Rey Bike Trail.
As we cruised down the carefully paved bike path, I found I couldn’t help but smile. I looked over at Melanie, who is naturally cautious like I am, but was now looking quite pleased as her golden brown hair flew behind her from underneath her helmet. She caught my eye and grinned

“Hurry up, slowpokes!” Ryan called as he zipped determinedly behind his father. He certainly wasn’t going to let his mom and sister slow him down. He rode ahead and then circled back, so he could ride at his own pace but still stick with the family. While Ryan may have been focused on speed, I was content to take in the view. I spotted some wildlife and a skate park buzzing with acrobatic and brave teenagers doing tricks, I even spotted a handful of skydivers gently cresting down to their landing point with colorful parachutes.

Exploring the Mission

About five miles down the path, we reached the destination of our tour, the historic San Luis Rey Mission. I was immediately struck by the beautiful white facade of the chapel. “Isn’t that something?” John remarked as we dismounted our bikes.
It was Saturday afternoon and the parking lot was slowly filling with reverent visitors. We followed them and entered the doors of the chapel, where we saw one of the most colorful church interiors I’d ever seen. The scenes and structures were vibrantly accented in yellow, green and red, and grounded by deep mahogany pews. The chapel was full of people, all content to sit respectfully in its glory.
John started meandering introspectively up one of the side aisles of the church and Ryan followed a step behind. Melanie seemed captivated by the altar. She was admiring it for a while, and I was certainly captivated as well. Topped with a wooden dome and surrounded by an archway of turquoise and a vibrant pinkish tan, the back wall featured statues of saints surrounding an inset sculpture of Jesus on the cross. The chapel’s interior was a work of art.

“This is so pretty,” Melanie observed.

I couldn’t have agreed more.

An unexpected revelation in an unexpected place

I exited the church feeling humbled and, surprisingly, slightly emotional. I felt lucky to have been able to experience such a significant place with my family. The worries that occupied my mind so frequently—Would the kids end up at a good college? Will they always be happy? Can I make the perfect dinner that everyone likes?—were trivial in comparison to this shared moment in this historic place. With its lasting adobe facade and historic past, the 200 year-old mission embodied the mainstays that were really important in life: love and family.

A perfect end to the day

After we explored the mission grounds, we rode back to Oceanside beach. It was a flurry of activity. Surfers paddled out and carved the waves on the north side of the pier. Families pedaled around on group bicycles. Young couples strolled along the pier holding hands. It was a joyous scene.
I’d been expecting a standard beach vacation, but that proved not to be the case. This vacation turned out to be one that left me feeling accomplishment, gratitude and fulfillment.

“Thanks, Dad!” I called louder than necessary to John. It prompted Melanie and Ryan to chime in, too.

“Yeah, way fun!” Melanie said.

“Definitely.” Ryan said, “And did you notice those skydivers?”

Uh-oh.

Reconnect with your family in Oceanside, where you’ll experience the best of Southern California.
